The Chastain Veterinary Medical Group hospitals have been performing laser surgery since 1998. We were among the first in the north Texas area to begin using a CO2 Surgical Laser on veterinary patients.
Why laser surgery? Laser surgery provides the same benefits to pets that human patients have enjoyed for over thirty years now. These benefits include the following:
- Less pain: The CO2 laser beam seals nerve endings and lymphatics, resulting in less post-operative swelling and pain. The patient experiences a far more comfortable post-operative recovery.
- Less bleeding: As it cuts, the laser beam seals small blood vessels.
- Less post-op infection: the cutting laser efficiently destroys bacteria in its path (a sanitizing effect).
- Faster recovery time: Reduced post-op pain, reduced risk of infection, less bleeding and less swelling, and less time under anesthesia all combine in most cases to allow the patient a speedy recovery after the surgery. Pets treated with laser surgery typically walk, eat, drink, or play much sooner than after conventional scalpel surgery.
Laser surgery also benefits the veterinary surgeon and the pet’s family, as well. The unique capabilities of a CO2 surgical laser make many surgical procedures much simpler, much faster and reduce patient risk.
The doctors of the Chastain Veterinary Medical Group have been so impressed with the capabilities of the surgical laser that we have decided to use it on almost all of our routine surgeries. These routine surgeries are:
- Spays
- Neuters
- Canine dewclaw removal
- Ear surgeries
- Eye and eyelid surgeries
- Lick granulomas
- Nasal fold and nostril surgery
- Oral surgery and surgery of the gums
- Tumor removal surgeries
- Feline declaw surgery
More on feline declaw surgery – One of the most remarkable advantages of Laser Surgery is the ability to perform laser assisted feline declawing. Anyone who has been through this procedure with their pet in the past probably knows how uncomfortable our little fur-balls can be afterwards when conventional surgical methods are used. Well, not any longer. In fact, as a matter of policy, we will not perform the surgical declawing of cats without the laser because the effect has been so amazingly effective. In this procedure especially, laser incisions dramatically decrease the pain involved.
