We want all our patients to not only live as long as possible, but also have the best quality of life possible.  Quality of Life is key. As a result, we firmly believe in weight management. If a pet is over or underweight it can significantly impact their health, and as a result, their quality of life.

Pets that are overweight or obese are at risk for most all of the same problems that bedevil overweight people: diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, arthritis, and cruciate ligament tears.

Whenever a patient comes into a Chastain Veterinary Medical Group facility for an exam they are weighed on a scale and body condition scored by the attending veterinarian. Allowing us to see how the patient’s weight compares to their previous weight and to their ideal weight. The doctor will then discuss with you options to optimize you pet’s weight, if appropriate.

We take a fairly holistic approach to this, discussing nutrition, exercise, behavioral modification and toys to try and find the best way to assist with optimal weight and maintenance.
